Which British car manufacturer makes the Land Rover Discovery?

The story behind the answer

The Land Rover Discovery is made by the British car manufacturer Land Rover.

The Discovery debuted in 1989 as a more practical, family-oriented companion to the upmarket Range Rover. It combined genuine four-wheel-drive ability with extra passenger and cargo space, helping establish the modern family off-roader. The first generation was closely related to the Range Rover and was offered in three-door and five-door forms.

Land Rover operated as a marque within Rover Group before becoming part of BMW, Ford, and eventually Tata Motors. Since 2008, Land Rover has been part of Jaguar Land Rover, so references to Jaguar Land Rover as the manufacturer are also historically accurate for later Discoveries. The vehicle itself, however, is branded a Land Rover Discovery—not a Jaguar, Bentley, or Aston Martin.

The fifth-generation Discovery arrived in 2017 and uses a lighter unitary body structure. In North America, some earlier versions were sold as the LR4, another name that can cause confusion when identifying the model.
