Which British author wrote 'The Chronicles of Narnia' series?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia series. The seven fantasy novels were published between 1950 and 1956, beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ending with The Last Battle.

Lewis was born Clive Staples Lewis in Belfast in 1898 and became a literary scholar, author, and Christian apologist. Narnia combines talking animals, mythical creatures, magic, and parallel worlds with themes drawn partly from Christian theology and classical mythology. The books were illustrated by Pauline Baynes, whose artwork became closely associated with the series.

A common mix-up is the reading order. The publication order begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, while the internal chronological order begins with The Magician's Nephew. Both sequences are widely used, but publication order preserves the way the original audience encountered the story.

Lewis was also a close friend and Oxford colleague of J.R.R. Tolkien, but Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, not Narnia.
