Which British author wrote 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'?
Answer
Lewis Carroll
Answer
Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Published in 1865, the novel follows Alice after she tumbles down a rabbit hole into a strange world populated by talking animals, eccentric figures, and impossible rules.
Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an Oxford mathematician, logician, photographer, and academic. The book’s playful treatment of language and logic made it a landmark of literary nonsense and helped move children’s literature away from purely instructional or moralizing stories. John Tenniel created the 42 wood-engraved illustrations for the original edition.
The character Alice shares her name with Alice Liddell, the daughter of the dean of Christ Church, Oxford. Carroll told an early version of the story to Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boating trip, but scholars continue to debate how directly the fictional character reflects her.
The novel is often shortened to Alice in Wonderland, but its full title is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll later published the sequel Through the Looking-Glass in 1871, introducing another mirror-world adventure.
