Which British admiral signed Japan’s surrender document in 1945?
Answer
Bruce Fraser
Answer
Bruce Fraser
Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser signed Japan’s surrender document for the United Kingdom in 1945.
Fraser signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He added the British signature after Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed for the United States and General Hsu Yung-chang signed for China.
Fraser was commander in chief of the British Pacific Fleet, which operated alongside American forces in the final campaigns against Japan. His fleet included British aircraft carriers and other vessels that supported operations in the Pacific during 1945.
He is sometimes confused with other famous British admirals of World War II, including Andrew Cunningham, who was closely associated with the Mediterranean and Royal Navy leadership, and John Tovey, who commanded the Home Fleet earlier in the war. The surrender ceremony included representatives from nine Allied nations, each signing in a specified sequence.
