Which Bristol bridge, opened in 1864, spans the Avon Gorge and was completed after Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s death?

The story behind the answer

Clifton Suspension Bridge is the Bristol bridge opened in 1864 that spans the Avon Gorge and was completed after Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s death.

Brunel won the competition to design the bridge in 1831, but financial and political difficulties delayed construction. Work eventually resumed in the 1860s under William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw, using Brunel’s original design as its basis.

The bridge links Clifton in Bristol with Leigh Woods in North Somerset. Its main span is about 214 metres, making it a major nineteenth-century suspension bridge and an enduring symbol of Bristol.

The bridge is often called a Brunel bridge, although Brunel did not live to see it open. It is a toll bridge for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, and it remains privately managed by the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust.
