Which bridge, opened in 1937, spans the Golden Gate between San Francisco and Marin County?

The story behind the answer

The Golden Gate Bridge, opened in 1937, spans the Golden Gate between San Francisco and Marin County.

Construction began in 1933 during the Great Depression, under chief engineer Joseph Strauss. The suspension bridge crosses the entrance to San Francisco Bay, connecting the city with the northern California peninsula. Its International Orange color was selected partly to improve visibility in the region’s frequent fog.

When completed, it had the world’s longest main suspension span, measuring 1,280 metres. That record lasted until 1964, when New York’s Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened. The Golden Gate Bridge remains one of the most recognizable bridges in the world, although it is sometimes confused with the nearby San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, which crosses the eastern part of the bay.

The bridge’s towers rise 227 metres above the water. Its roadway carries U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, while separate walkways serve pedestrians and cyclists.
