Which bridge in Turkey crosses the Dardanelles and has the world’s longest suspension-bridge central span?

The story behind the answer

The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge crosses Turkey’s Dardanelles and has the world’s longest suspension-bridge central span, measuring 2,023 metres.

The bridge opened in 2022, linking the European Gallipoli peninsula with Lapseki on the Asian side. Its central-span length was chosen to reflect 2023, the centenary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

Its name refers to the 1915 naval campaign during the First World War, while the opening date marked the 107th anniversary of the Çanakkale victory. The crossing forms part of the Kınalı–Tekirdağ–Çanakkale–Savaştepe motorway route.

The bridge is distinct from Istanbul’s Bosphorus crossings, which connect the two sides of Istanbul. The Dardanelles is a separate strait farther west, linking the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
