Which bridge in Portugal, opened in 1998, is named for explorer Vasco da Gama?

The story behind the answer

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the Portuguese bridge opened in 1998 and named for explorer Vasco da Gama.

It crosses the Tagus River east of Lisbon and was built to relieve pressure on the older 25 de Abril Bridge. At approximately 17.2 kilometres, it is among Europe’s longest bridges, although the exact length depends on whether associated viaducts and access structures are included.

The bridge opened on 29 March 1998, shortly before Lisbon hosted Expo ’98, which commemorated the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. Its cable-stayed central section is supported by tall pylons, while much of the route consists of viaducts over the broad estuary. Its name refers to the explorer, not to a Portuguese monarch or a nearby district.
