Which bridge in New York City is named after Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano?
Answer
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
Answer
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City is named after Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano.
The suspension bridge connects Staten Island and Brooklyn across The Narrows, the tidal strait linking New York Harbor with Lower New York Bay. It opened in 1964 and was designed by engineer Othmar Ammann.
When completed, its 1,298-metre main span was the longest suspension-bridge span in the world. It held that record until 1981, when England’s Humber Bridge surpassed it. The bridge remains one of New York’s major transport landmarks and carries Interstate 278.
Its name is sometimes written with one z or without the final vowel in informal usage, but the official name uses “Verrazzano-Narrows.” It is also distinct from the nearby Brooklyn Bridge, which crosses the East River.
