Which bridge in Michigan spans the Straits of Mackinac and opened in 1957?
Answer
Mackinac Bridge
Answer
Mackinac Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge spans Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac and opened in 1957.
The bridge connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas, replacing a ferry service that struggled to handle growing traffic and winter conditions. It carries Interstate 75 across the straits and is a major link between the two parts of the state.
Its total length is 8,038 metres, making it one of the longest suspension bridges in the world by total length. The main suspension span measures 1,158 metres. The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman, a prominent American bridge engineer.
The Mackinac Bridge is sometimes called “Mighty Mac.” It should not be confused with the smaller Blue Water Bridge near Port Huron, which connects Michigan with Ontario across the St. Clair River.
