Which bridge in Lisbon is named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and crosses the Tagus?

The story behind the answer

Lisbon’s Vasco da Gama Bridge is named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and crosses the Tagus River.

The bridge opened in 1998 during Expo 98, the international exposition held in Lisbon. It connects the city’s eastern side with Montijo and Sacavém, helping relieve traffic on the older 25 de Abril Bridge.

Its full crossing, including viaducts and approach sections, is about 17.2 kilometres long, making it one of Europe’s longest bridges. The main cable-stayed section crosses the navigable channel near the northern bank.

The bridge’s name honours Vasco da Gama’s 1497–1499 voyage from Portugal to India. It is separate from Lisbon’s 25 de Abril Bridge, which is the city’s older suspension crossing and was formerly called the Salazar Bridge.
