The London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was bought from London and rebuilt in 1971.
The bridge is the stone-faced 1831 structure designed by John Rennie, not London’s later Tower Bridge. London authorities sold it in 1968 after deciding that the old bridge could not adequately handle modern traffic.
American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge, and its numbered stones were dismantled, shipped to the United States and reassembled over a canal in the planned community of Lake Havasu City. The reconstructed bridge was rededicated in 1971.
The project created a distinctive Arizona landmark and helped attract visitors to the developing city. The bridge is often mistaken for Tower Bridge because both are strongly associated with London, but Tower Bridge remains in its original location beside the River Thames.
