Which bridge in Germany carries a waterway over the Elbe River in Magdeburg?

The story behind the answer

The Magdeburg Water Bridge carries a waterway over the Elbe River in Magdeburg, Germany.

The aqueduct forms part of the Magdeburg waterway crossing, linking the Mittelland Canal with the Elbe–Havel Canal. It opened in October 2003 after roughly six years of construction. The project allows large canal vessels to cross the Elbe without descending into the river and then climbing back up through locks.

The bridge is about 918 metres long in total, including its land approaches, and its navigable trough is about 690 metres long over the river and adjacent floodplain. The structure is made primarily of steel and concrete.

It is often confused with an ordinary road or railway bridge because ships travel across its deck. Its defining feature is that the transported medium is water: the canal itself crosses above the natural river.
