Which bridge in China spans the Sidu River and was once described as the world’s highest bridge?

The story behind the answer

Sidu River Bridge spans China’s Sidu River and was once described as the world’s highest bridge.

The suspension bridge carries the G50 Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway across a deep valley in Hubei Province. It opened to traffic in 2009 and has a deck roughly 496 metres above the river below, depending on the measurement used.

Its main span is about 900 metres long. The bridge was an important transport link through mountainous western Hubei, where deep gorges make conventional roads and railways difficult to build.

Sidu River Bridge is sometimes confused with the Beipan River Bridge, which later became associated with the title of world’s highest bridge. “Highest” refers to the vertical distance from the bridge deck to the ground or water beneath it, not the length of the span or the height of the towers.
