Which bridge crosses the Tagus in Lisbon and was named for the Portuguese revolution of 25 April 1974?

The story behind the answer

The 25 de Abril Bridge is the Lisbon bridge across the Tagus named for Portugal’s 25 April 1974 revolution.

The bridge opened in 1966 as the Ponte sobre o Tejo, or Tagus Bridge, and was initially named after António de Oliveira Salazar. After the Carnation Revolution ended the Estado Novo dictatorship in 1974, it received its current commemorative name.

Its design is a large suspension bridge with a red-painted steel structure. A lower railway deck was added beneath the original road deck in 1999, allowing the crossing to serve both road and rail traffic.

The bridge is often compared with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge because of its appearance and engineering lineage, but the two bridges are distinct. The 25 de Abril Bridge connects Lisbon with Almada on the south bank and remains one of the city’s most recognizable views.
