Which bridge crosses San Francisco Bay and connects San Francisco with Oakland?

The story behind the answer

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge crosses San Francisco Bay and connects the cities of San Francisco and Oakland.

Opened in 1936, the Bay Bridge carries Interstate 80 and is one of the principal road links across the bay. It is a complex system rather than a single simple span, including a western suspension section, a central tunnel on Yerba Buena Island, and an eastern self-anchored suspension span.

The eastern span was replaced after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the original structure. The new eastern span opened to traffic in 2013 and was designed with major seismic upgrades.

The Bay Bridge is frequently mistaken for the Golden Gate Bridge because both are associated with San Francisco. The Golden Gate crosses the entrance to the Pacific Ocean, while the Bay Bridge crosses the bay toward Oakland.
