Answer
San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge
Answer
San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge
The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and connects San Francisco with Yerba Buena Island and Oakland.
The bridge carries Interstate 80 across San Francisco Bay, linking the western and eastern shores through Yerba Buena Island. It was built during the 1930s and opened to traffic on November 12, 1936, six months before the nearby Golden Gate Bridge.
The original eastern span was a cantilever structure, while the western span used suspension technology. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the eastern span, California replaced it with a self-anchored suspension span that opened in 2013. The western span remained in service.
The Bay Bridge is commonly mistaken for the Golden Gate Bridge because both are major San Francisco landmarks. The Golden Gate crosses the entrance to the Pacific Ocean and is known for its orange color; the Bay Bridge crosses the bay itself and provides the direct road link to Oakland.
