Which Brazilian landmark is a 30-metre Art Deco statue of Jesus atop Mount Corcovado?
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is the Brazilian landmark formed by a 30-metre Art Deco statue of Jesus atop Mount Corcovado.
The statue stands above Rio de Janeiro with outstretched arms, creating a span of about 28 metres. Its design was developed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, while French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski created the head and hands. The face was sculpted by Gheorghe Leonida.
Construction took place from 1926 to 1931, and the monument was inaugurated on 12 October 1931. It is made primarily from reinforced concrete and covered with small triangular soapstone tiles, which workers applied in a mosaic pattern.
The monument is often casually described as the world’s largest statue of Jesus, but such claims depend on how height and supporting structures are measured. Its 8-metre pedestal is separate from the statue itself. Christ the Redeemer is also distinct from the granite Sugarloaf Mountain, another major Rio landmark.
