Which Brazilian artist holds the Guinness World Record for largest graffiti mural?
Answer
Eduardo Kobra
Answer
Eduardo Kobra
The Brazilian artist associated with the Guinness World Record for the largest graffiti mural is Eduardo Kobra. Born Carlos Eduardo Fernandes Léo in São Paulo, Kobra is known for enormous, intensely colorful murals that combine spray-paint technique with geometric blocks of color and archival or photographic imagery.
Kobra began painting illegally as a teenager and officially started his artistic career in 1987, at age 11. His early São Paulo projects developed into the “Memory Walls” series, which incorporated historic photographs into large public artworks. He later expanded internationally, painting murals across multiple continents and using large walls to depict figures such as Oscar Niemeyer, Gandhi, John Lennon, and other cultural icons.
Kobra’s record-setting reputation comes from murals measured in thousands of square metres. In 2016, he created a huge Olympic-themed mural in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2017 he surpassed that achievement with a street mural measuring about 5,742 square metres. “Graffiti” and “street mural” are sometimes used loosely for these large commissioned works, but the artist identified by this record clue is Kobra, not the Brazilian collectives Os Gêmeos or the artists Vhils and Speto.
