Which brand produces the spicy instant noodle 'Shin Ramyun'?

The story behind the answer

The brand that produces the spicy instant noodle Shin Ramyun is Nongshim.

Nongshim is a South Korean food company headquartered in Seoul. It introduced Shin Ramyun in October 1986, creating a strongly seasoned instant noodle whose name uses shin, the Korean character 辛, meaning “spicy.” The product’s red packaging and bold flavor helped distinguish it from milder ramyeon products already on the market.

Shin Ramyun was inspired partly by sogogi jangguk, a Korean spicy beef-and-vegetable soup. A standard packet contains precooked noodles, a powdered soup base, and dried vegetable flakes. Later versions included Shin Ramyun Black, Shin Red, and other regional varieties, but Nongshim remains the producer behind the brand.

Nongshim began in 1965 under the name Lotte Food Industrial Company and adopted the name Nongshim in 1978. Shin Ramyun quickly became one of its flagship products: after its introduction, the company’s share of South Korea’s instant-noodle market rose sharply during the late 1980s.

Ottogi, Paldo, and Samyang are also major Korean noodle companies, which makes them plausible distractors. Samyang, in particular, is associated with the popular Buldak spicy noodle line, not Shin Ramyun.
