Tide introduced the first commercially successful synthetic detergent in 1946. Procter & Gamble developed the product in the United States as a powerful laundry cleaner designed to work better than traditional soap in hard water.
Tide’s formula used synthetic surfactants and builders, allowing it to remove soil effectively without forming the same insoluble soap scum associated with soap-based washing products. The brand was marketed as a heavy-duty detergent and quickly became a major consumer product after its launch.
Tide’s introduction followed years of chemical research into detergents, including work accelerated by shortages of fats and oils during wartime. It is important to distinguish synthetic detergent from ordinary soap: both clean fabrics, but their chemistry and performance in mineral-rich water differ. Tide later became known for its bright orange packaging and broad range of laundry products.
