Which boxer was known as the 'Manassa Mauler'?

Jack Dempsey was known as the Manassa Mauler.

The nickname referred to Dempsey's birthplace, Manassa, Colorado, and his aggressive, destructive style in the ring. Born William Harrison Dempsey in 1895, he became one of the most famous heavyweight boxers of the early twentieth century. He competed professionally from 1914 to 1927.

Dempsey won the world heavyweight championship in 1919 by defeating Jess Willard in a fight remembered for its one-sided violence. He knocked Willard down repeatedly and ended the contest when Willard's corner stopped it after the third round. Dempsey held the title until 1926, when Gene Tunney defeated him on points.

The Manassa Mauler nickname is sometimes confused with other historic heavyweight labels. John L. Sullivan was known as the Boston Strong Boy, while Joe Louis became the Brown Bomber. Dempsey's identity, however, is closely tied to Manassa and to the mauling, forward-moving style that made him a major sports celebrity during the Roaring Twenties.
