The BMW Z8 was James Bond’s roadster in The World Is Not Enough.
Released in 1999, the film made the Z8 Pierce Brosnan’s third BMW-associated Bond car, following the Z3 in GoldenEye and the 750iL in Tomorrow Never Dies. In the story, Bond drives the Z8 during his mission in Azerbaijan, where it is equipped with fictional gadgets including surface-to-air missiles and remote-control capability.
The Z8 was a real production roadster built from 1998 to 2003 under BMW’s E52 development code. Its styling deliberately echoed the classic BMW 507 of the 1950s, but its mechanicals were modern: the standard car used a 4.9-liter V8 related to the engine in the E39 M5. That connection makes the Z8 more than a movie prop; it was BMW’s flagship sports car of its era.
A common mix-up is the BMW Z3, which appeared earlier in GoldenEye. The Z3 is also a Bond BMW, but the car cut in half by a helicopter in The World Is Not Enough is specifically the Z8.
