Which BMW-powered Brabham won the 1983 Formula One Drivers' Championship?

The BMW-powered Brabham BT52 won the 1983 Formula One Drivers' Championship with Nelson Piquet at the wheel.

Designed by Gordon Murray, the BT52 was created in just six weeks after Formula One banned ground-effect underbodies. Its distinctive dart-shaped body and short sidepods were built around BMW's 1.5-litre, four-cylinder M12/13 turbocharged engine. The chassis was later updated into the BT52B during the season.

Piquet scored 59 points, narrowly beating Alain Prost by two. His title was historically important: he became the first Formula One Drivers' Champion to win the title with a turbocharged car. Brabham finished only third in the Constructors' Championship, showing how strongly the result depended on Piquet's consistency.

A common mix-up is the Brabham BT49, which Piquet drove to his first championship in 1981 with a naturally aspirated Ford-Cosworth engine. The BT50 was the immediate BMW-powered predecessor, while the BT52 was the successful 1983 successor.
