Which BMW model series debuted in 1975?

The story behind the answer

Which BMW model series debuted in 1975? The BMW 3 Series debuted in 1975.

The first-generation 3 Series, designated E21, replaced BMW’s 02 Series and entered production in June 1975. BMW positioned it as a compact executive car with a sporty rear-wheel-drive layout, helping establish the formula that still defines the series.

At launch, the E21 was offered only as a two-door saloon, with four-cylinder petrol engines in 316, 318 and 320 forms. Fuel injection arrived later in 1975, and six-cylinder versions joined the range in 1977. A Baur-built convertible was also available from 1978.

The 3 Series name is sometimes confused with the 5 Series, which actually debuted earlier, in 1972. BMW later introduced the 6 Series in 1976 and the 7 Series in 1977/1978, while the 1 Series did not arrive until 2004. The E21 established the lineage that continues through modern generations.
