Which BMW model debuted the ZF 6HP26 six-speed automatic in 2002?

The BMW 7 Series (E65) debuted the ZF 6HP26 six-speed automatic transmission. The first application was the fourth-generation 7 Series, whose advanced electronic automatic gearbox marked a major step beyond the five-speed units then common in luxury cars.

ZF’s 6HP26 used a conventional hydraulic torque converter and planetary gearsets, but its internal arrangement was unusually efficient. It employed the Lepelletier gear mechanism, which combines a simple planetary gearset with a Ravigneaux gearset to create six ratios with fewer components than many older designs. The result was a relatively compact and light transmission with a broad ratio spread.

A date distinction is worth noting: references often identify the E65 application as 2001, while some quiz wording gives 2002 for the model’s introduction or availability. That timing issue does not change the canonical vehicle answer. The E65 7 Series is the model associated with the first 6HP26 installation.
