The BMW engine used in the F10 M5 is the S63, a twin-turbocharged V8. BMW’s fifth-generation M5 replaced the naturally aspirated V10 of the E60 with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, giving the sedan stronger torque and improved efficiency.
The F10 M5 debuted in 2011 and was the first M5 to use turbocharging. Its S63 engine produced 560 hp and 680 Nm of torque in standard form, sending power to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Competition versions received further output increases.
A common mix-up is the N63, another BMW twin-turbo V8 family engine. Although the S63 is closely related to the N63, BMW M modified it extensively for high-performance use, including stronger internals, revised lubrication and different engine management. The S55 is a twin-turbo inline-six used in later M3 and M4 models, while the N55 is a non-M turbocharged inline-six.
