Which BMW car won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999?
Answer
BMW V12 LMR
Answer
BMW V12 LMR
The BMW V12 LMR won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999.
The winning car was the No. 15 BMW V12 LMR entered by Team BMW Motorsport and run by Schnitzer Motorsport. Yannick Dalmas, Pierluigi Martini and Joachim Winkelhock shared driving duties, completing 366 laps on 12–13 June 1999. It was BMW’s first overall Le Mans victory as a constructor’s car, following the company’s 1995 success as an engine supplier to McLaren.
The V12 LMR was an open-top sports prototype powered by BMW’s S70/3 6.0-litre V12. Its victory came in a fiercely competitive field that included Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Nissan and Panoz. The race also became associated with Mercedes-Benz’s dramatic airborne accidents during practice and the event.
The winning BMW should not be confused with the BMW V12 LM, its earlier predecessor, or with BMW’s M3-based racing cars. The M1 Procar was an earlier silhouette racer, the 320i competed in touring-car categories, and the M3 GTR was a later GT racing model. BMW’s 1999 victory was a prototype-class triumph.
