Which bird was represented by Twitter’s original blue logo, Larry the Bird?

The story behind the answer

Twitter’s original blue logo, Larry the Bird, represented a mountain bluebird.

The bird was named Larry in a reference to basketball player Larry Bird, who played for the Boston Celtics. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone was a Celtics fan, and the name connected the social platform’s early identity with a well-known sports figure.

The first version of the bird was purchased from a stock-graphics marketplace. Artist Simon Oxley created the basic illustration, which Twitter later adapted and refined. The simplified bird became a prominent symbol of short online messages.

Twitter introduced a more geometric bird mark in 2012 and eventually retired the bird branding when the company rebranded as X in 2023. The mountain-bluebird description concerns the original Larry identity, not every later variation.
