Which bird of prey is the national bird of the Philippines?

The story behind the answer

The Philippine eagle is the national bird of the Philippines.

The Philippine eagle is a large forest eagle endemic to the Philippines. It was formerly called the monkey-eating eagle, but that common name was changed because its diet is varied and includes several kinds of mammals, birds, reptiles, and other prey. The bird’s shaggy crest and large bill give it a distinctive appearance.

The species was declared the national bird of the Philippines in 1995. It is critically endangered because of deforestation, hunting, and the loss of large trees used for nesting. A pair generally raises a single chick only after a long breeding interval, so population recovery is especially slow.

Philippine eagles require extensive mature forest and large territories. Conservation work includes habitat protection, captive breeding, public education, and rehabilitation of injured birds. The species is sometimes confused with the harpy eagle, but the Philippine eagle evolved on islands in Southeast Asia, while the harpy eagle is native to the Americas.
