Which bird of prey is known as the monkey-eating eagle?
Answer
Philippine eagle
Answer
Philippine eagle
The Philippine eagle is known as the monkey-eating eagle.
The Philippine eagle received this former common name because early accounts emphasized its ability to prey on monkeys. The name is misleading, however, because monkeys are only one part of a varied diet that can include flying lemurs, civets, snakes, birds, and other mammals.
Pithecophaga jefferyi is endemic to the Philippines and lives in mature forests on several islands. It is one of the world’s largest forest eagles, with a long crest, broad wings, and powerful feet adapted for hunting among trees.
The species is critically endangered because extensive deforestation has destroyed and fragmented its habitat. Philippine law protects the eagle, and conservation programmes combine captive breeding, forest protection, and public education. Its official common name is now Philippine eagle rather than monkey-eating eagle.
