Which bird of prey is famous for building the largest nest of any bird?

The story behind the answer

The bald eagle is famous for building the largest nest of any bird.

Bald eagles usually build nests in large trees near water, using sticks and lining the interior with softer materials such as grass and moss. They often return to the same nest for many years, adding new material each breeding season. This can make the structure enormous.

A bald eagle nest recorded in Florida measured about 2.9 metres deep, 2.7 metres wide and weighed nearly 2,700 kilograms. Such extreme measurements are unusual, but nests weighing hundreds of kilograms are possible. The species’ habit of reusing nests helps explain their size.

Bald eagles are not the only eagles that build huge nests, and “largest nest” refers to the structure rather than the bird’s body. Their nests are called aeries, although that word can also describe the nesting place of other eagles.
