Which bird of prey has a stomach acid strong enough to dissolve large bones?
Answer
Bearded vulture
Answer
Bearded vulture
The bearded vulture has stomach acid strong enough to dissolve large bones.
This extraordinary adaptation allows the species to obtain nutrients from bones that most scavenging birds cannot digest. Bones form the overwhelming majority of its diet, especially when carcasses have been stripped of flesh by other animals.
The bearded vulture often carries large bones high into the air and drops them onto rocky slopes. The broken fragments, called bone shards, are then swallowed. Smaller pieces may be swallowed whole, while especially large bones are dropped repeatedly.
It is also called the lammergeier, a name derived from German words meaning “lamb vulture.” Despite old stories that it carried away lambs, its specialized diet is overwhelmingly bone-based. Adults have dark bodies, a contrasting pale head, and a dark facial mask.
