Which bird is known for its V-shaped flying formations during migration?

The story behind the answer

The Canada goose is known for flying in V-shaped formations during migration. Large flocks can often be seen overhead in spring and autumn, when they move between northern breeding grounds and wintering areas farther south.

The V formation is more than a recognizable pattern. Each bird can benefit from the air currents created by the bird ahead, reducing the effort needed to stay aloft. The lead position is the most demanding, so geese take turns at the front during longer flights. The formation also helps birds maintain visual contact and coordinate the flock.

Canada geese are naturally migratory, and many use familiar staging and resting areas along their routes. Some populations, however, have become partly or largely non-migratory where mild winters, plentiful food and fewer predators allow them to remain year-round. This is why Canada geese may be seen in the same region in every season.

The species is also highly social outside migration. Parents usually remain with their goslings through the first spring migration, and family groups may travel together within a larger flock. Their loud calls help keep the group coordinated while in flight.
