Musk began buying Twitter shares in January 2022 and disclosed a stake of roughly 9.1% by April, making him the platform's largest shareholder at the time. He declined an offer to join Twitter's board and instead proposed taking the company private. Twitter's board accepted his offer on April 25, after which the deal moved through months of financing, legal disputes, and an attempted withdrawal by Musk.
The acquisition closed in late October, and Twitter became a private company under Musk's control. The corporate entity was later folded into X Corp., and the platform was rebranded as X. A common mix-up is crediting Jack Dorsey, Twitter's co-founder and former chief executive, with the purchase; Dorsey helped create the platform but did not buy it. Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos were also not the buyers.
