Which billionaire founded the social media platform Facebook?
Answer
Mark Zuckerberg
Answer
Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with fellow Harvard students in 2004.
Zuckerberg launched the site as TheFacebook on February 4, 2004, initially restricting membership to Harvard College students. Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes helped establish and develop the service, so Zuckerberg is more precisely described as its lead founder and one of several co-founders.
The website expanded from Harvard to other universities, then to schools and users more broadly. In 2005, the company dropped “The” from its name after acquiring the Facebook.com domain. Facebook’s growth was powered by network effects, advertising and expansion across mobile and international markets.
A frequent mix-up is naming one of the other early collaborators as the sole founder. Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz were important early co-founders, while Eduardo Saverin helped finance the original venture. Zuckerberg, however, is the standard single answer to this trivia question.
