Larry Ellison founded Oracle Corporation, originally established as Software Development Laboratories.

Ellison started the company in 1977 with Bob Miner and Ed Oates after working at the technology firm Ampex. The founders built software around the relational-database ideas described in an influential research paper by IBM researcher Edgar F. Codd. Their first major product was designed for compatibility with the CIA project code-named Oracle, which helped inspire the company’s later name.

Oracle became a leading provider of database software and expanded into business applications, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise technology. Ellison is often described as Oracle’s founder even though Miner and Oates were co-founders and early technical leaders. He served as chief executive until 2014 and remains the company’s executive chairman and chief technology officer.
