The name combines Basque words commonly translated as “white bridge.” The bridge is also known as the Campo Volantin Footbridge or Puente del Campo Volantin. Santiago Calatrava designed it as a tied-arch pedestrian crossing over the Nervion River, linking the Campo Volantin side with Uribitarte.

Zubizuri opened in 1997, during the period when Bilbao was reshaping its image through high-profile cultural and urban projects. Its white arch, curved deck and suspension cables made it a recognizable symbol of the city’s transformation and provide a pedestrian route toward the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
