The big cat species with vertical black stripes on orange fur is the tiger.
The tiger, Panthera tigris, has an orange coat that can range from yellowish to reddish, marked with dark stripes. Most stripes run vertically along the body, while those on the limbs and forehead can run more horizontally. Each tiger’s pattern is individually distinctive, much like a fingerprint.
The stripes are not merely decorative. In forests, reeds and tall grass, alternating bands of light and shadow can break up the tiger’s outline. Its orange coloration may also be effective camouflage because many hoofed prey animals have limited color vision and may perceive the coat differently from humans.
Tigers are often confused with leopards or jaguars, but those cats have spots or rosettes rather than the tiger’s long body stripes. White tigers are still tigers: their pale coat is a color variant, and their stripes remain visible. Tigers are generally solitary ambush predators that hunt mainly hooved mammals.
