Which biblical figure is traditionally said to have brought the Holy Grail to Britain?

The story behind the answer

Joseph of Arimathea is traditionally said to have brought the Holy Grail to Britain.

In the New Testament, Joseph is described as a wealthy follower of Jesus who requested Jesus’s body after the crucifixion and placed it in a tomb. The Bible does not say that Joseph owned or transported a Grail to Britain.

That association developed in medieval literature, especially in Robert de Boron’s Joseph d’Arimathie and later Grail romances. These works describe a sacred vessel connected with the Last Supper and the blood of Christ, then place Joseph and his descendants at the beginning of the Grail’s western history.

Glastonbury traditions later connected Joseph with southwest England, although historians distinguish those later legends from biblical evidence. Joseph’s role in the Grail story is therefore a medieval literary tradition rather than a statement found directly in the New Testament.
