Which biblical book is quoted in the Liberty Bell's inscription?
Answer
Leviticus
Answer
Leviticus
The Liberty Bell's inscription quotes the biblical book of Leviticus.
Its inscription reads, “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof,” followed by the reference “Levit. XXV. v X.” That citation points to Leviticus, chapter 25, verse 10.
The Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly commissioned the bell in 1751 for the State House in Philadelphia. London founders Lester and Pack cast it, but it cracked during testing after arriving. Philadelphia founders John Pass and John Stow recast it, and their names appear on the bell.
The bell became widely known as the Liberty Bell in the nineteenth century, especially through its adoption by abolitionist groups. Its famous large crack developed sometime in the first half of that century, but the exact cause and date remain uncertain.
