Which Bible verse is quoted in the inscription on Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell?

The story behind the answer

The Liberty Bell’s inscription cites Leviticus 25:10, a verse about proclaiming liberty throughout the land.

The bell was ordered for the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall, and arrived in Philadelphia in 1752. It cracked during an early test or shortly afterward and was recast twice by Philadelphia founders John Pass and John Stow.

Its inscription uses an older spelling of Pennsylvania and includes the words “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.” The wording comes from the King James Bible’s translation of Leviticus 25:10, which concerns the Jubilee year in ancient Israel.

The bell became a national symbol of American independence, especially during the 19th century. The familiar large crack is associated with its later history, but historians cannot establish one certain date for when the visible crack first appeared. The bell is now displayed at the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia.
