Which Beyoncé film role was named Deena Jones?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé played Deena Jones in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls is a musical drama directed by Bill Condon and adapted from the stage musical of the same name. Its story follows a fictional singing trio called the Dreams and the pressures of fame, ambition, management, and changing musical tastes.

Deena Jones is the group’s lead singer after a major change in the trio’s career. Beyoncé acted alongside Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Anika Noni Rose. The film’s music includes “Listen,” a song written especially for the movie and performed by Beyoncé.

Dreamgirls is often confused with Beyoncé’s other acting projects. In Cadillac Records, she portrayed singer Etta James, while in Obsessed she played Sharon Charles. Her voice also appeared in the 2019 remake of The Lion King, where she voiced Nala. Deena Jones therefore belongs specifically to Dreamgirls, not to one of those later films.
