Which Berlin landmark is the focal point of Germany's televised New Year's Eve celebration at the Brandenburg Gate?

The story behind the answer

The Brandenburg Gate is the focal landmark of Berlin’s major New Year’s Eve celebration.

The gate stands at the western end of Unter den Linden and forms a central backdrop for the large public party held along Straße des 17. Juni. Concerts, light displays, fireworks, and a midnight countdown have made the location one of Europe’s most recognizable New Year settings. Television coverage often shows the gate behind the stage and crowds.

The neoclassical monument was built between 1788 and 1791 during the reign of King Frederick William II of Prussia. Its design was inspired by the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, and it is topped by a quadriga sculpture. During the Cold War, the gate stood in the restricted area beside the Berlin Wall. Since German reunification, it has become a national symbol of unity as well as a venue for major civic celebrations.
