Which Berlin landmark hosts the city's major New Year's Eve celebration and fireworks?

The story behind the answer

Berlin's Brandenburg Gate hosts the city's major New Year's Eve celebration and fireworks.

The gate stands at the western end of Unter den Linden and has long been one of Berlin's most recognizable landmarks. Large crowds gather on the Straße des 17. Juni leading toward the gate for an organized open-air celebration.

The Brandenburg Gate was completed in 1791 and was modeled on the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens. Its Quadriga sculpture, showing a chariot drawn by four horses, crowns the structure.

Because the gate stood beside the former Berlin Wall, it also became a powerful symbol of German reunification. The New Year's Eve event is a modern public celebration; it should not be confused with the gate's older political and military history.
