Which Bennet sister marries Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice?
Answer
Elizabeth Bennet
Answer
Elizabeth Bennet
Elizabeth Bennet marries Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
Elizabeth is the second-eldest of the five Bennet sisters and the novel’s central character. Her eventual marriage to Fitzwilliam Darcy resolves the story’s main emotional conflict: Darcy must overcome his pride, while Elizabeth must reconsider the prejudice created by her first impressions of him.
Their relationship is not straightforward. Darcy initially insults Elizabeth at the Meryton assembly, and she later believes George Wickham’s account of Darcy’s supposed cruelty. Darcy’s first proposal fails because Elizabeth is angry about his treatment of Jane and Bingley and his alleged mistreatment of Wickham. After Darcy explains himself in a letter, Elizabeth gradually recognises that her judgment has been unfair.
The turning point comes at Pemberley, Darcy’s Derbyshire estate, where Elizabeth sees evidence of his generosity and altered manners. Darcy then helps arrange Lydia Bennet’s marriage to Wickham, discreetly protecting the Bennet family from scandal. When he proposes again, Elizabeth accepts, after securing her father’s approval.
Jane Bennet, Elizabeth’s elder sister, also marries well: she marries Charles Bingley. The other sisters do not marry Darcy, making Elizabeth the unique answer to this question.
