Which Benjamin Britten opera follows the fisherman Peter Grimes?

The story behind the answer

Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes follows a troubled fisherman of the same name.

Britten composed the opera to a libretto by Montagu Slater, based on George Crabbe’s poem “The Borough.” The story is set in a fictional Suffolk coastal village and explores suspicion, isolation, social pressure, and the destructive force of rumor.

Peter Grimes premiered at Sadler’s Wells in London on 7 June 1945, with the composer conducting. It was Britten’s first major operatic success and helped establish him as one of the leading British composers of the twentieth century.

The opera is famous for its orchestral interludes, including “Dawn,” “Sunday Morning,” “Moonlight,” and “Storm.” These scenes evoke the sea while also reflecting the changing emotional atmosphere of the village and its protagonist.
