Which bell is associated with the American independence movement in Philadelphia?

The story behind the answer

The Liberty Bell is associated with the American independence movement in Philadelphia.

The bell was cast in London in 1752 for the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. It cracked during an early test and was recast twice by Philadelphia foundries John Pass and John Stow. The bell bears the inscription “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof.”

The bell became a national symbol during the nineteenth century, especially after abolitionists and other reformers adopted its liberty message. The familiar story that it rang to announce the Declaration of Independence in 1776 is not supported by contemporary evidence.

Its famous visible crack developed over time, and the bell has not been rung since 1846. Today it is displayed at the Liberty Bell Center near Independence Hall, where it remains one of Philadelphia’s best-known symbols of the founding era.
