Which Beat writer founded San Francisco’s City Lights bookstore in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Lawrence Ferlinghetti founded San Francisco’s City Lights bookstore in 1953.

Ferlinghetti established City Lights with Peter D. Martin in the city’s North Beach neighborhood. It became the first American bookstore devoted entirely to paperback books and helped create an important meeting place for writers, readers, and political activists.

The bookstore’s publishing arm, City Lights Publishers, became especially important in 1956 when it issued Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems. The publication led to an obscenity trial, which ended with Judge Clayton W. Horn ruling that the poem had redeeming social importance.

City Lights is often described simply as a Beat bookstore, but its catalog and cultural role were broader. It published international poetry, political writing, and experimental literature, while remaining strongly associated with Ferlinghetti and the Beat movement. Ferlinghetti also wrote poetry, including the collection A Coney Island of the Mind.
