Which Beat poet wrote the 1959 collection Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems?

The story behind the answer

Gary Snyder wrote the 1959 collection Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems. Snyder became known for poetry that joined close observation of landscapes with Buddhist thought, wilderness experience, manual labor, and traditional Chinese and Japanese influences.

The book contains two related sections. “Riprap” draws on Snyder’s experience working in demanding physical environments, while “Cold Mountain Poems” presents his translations or adaptations of poems attributed to the Chinese poet Hanshan, whose name is often translated as Cold Mountain.

Snyder’s work is sometimes placed simply under the label “Beat poet,” but his literary identity also includes deep engagement with Zen Buddhism, ecology, mountaineering, and environmental ethics. His interests helped broaden the movement’s image beyond urban cafés and New York or San Francisco nightlife.

The title can cause confusion because Cold Mountain is also the name of a later historical novel and film unrelated to Snyder’s collection. In Snyder’s book, the phrase refers to Hanshan’s poetic tradition and to the spiritual and natural landscapes central to the volume.
